Do you think the FBI should be able to access iPhones to ensure American’s safety? Apple needs to help America in times of crisis if it has the opportunity to do so. The Fourth Amendment says the government has a right to search if it has a warrant and/or a probable cause. According to PRO/CON: Was Apple justified in refusing to help the FBI? FBI officials maintained that the government has the right to force companies to undertake activities that will help the government obtain people’s personal information. The FBI should be able to access citizens phones if it means protecting other citizens. If the FBI has a “probable cause” as stated in The Fourth Amendment, they should have every right to access an iPhone. The Fourth Amendment does give people a right to privacy. The right to privacy guarantees people can use products without fear of sharing information with the government. Therefore, Apple has the right to provide products that help individuals protect this right. Most iPhone owners know that there are rules to keep their phones from being accessed by people they don’t want accessing their phone, FBI included. If the FBI were to access their phones without permission, that would be a violation of Apple’s security rights. Apple's CEO should have helped the government because the threat of terrorism is at its highest level in years. Our political leaders have been slow to heed those warnings, but now, hopefully, they are starting to realize that what could be World War III has already started. It will not end until we eliminate the tens of thousands of fanatics eager to perpetrate atrocities based on hoary 14th century religious decrees. America needs all the help it can get with terrorism. If Apple is asked to help to protect Americans from threats, Apple should be doing everything it can. When Farooq was planning the mass shooting, the FBI could have accessed his phone easily if Apple would have cooperated. Instead, Apple’s Cook refused to help, and the FBI wasted time to access the phone themselves. America needs all the help it can get with terrorism.
